WORD

1 John 2:12-17 STUDY

Reasons for Writing

12 I am writing to you, dear children,
because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.

13 I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome the evil one.

14 I write to you, dear children,
because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
because you are strong,
and the word of God lives in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.

On Not Loving the World

15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[a] is not in them.

16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.

17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.

INSIGHT

Here John is writing to children who know God, Fathers, and young men.

He is addressing Gods children, those who know truth. And he says they have overcome the evil one and the their sins have been forgiven.

John warns us about the world, telling us do not love the world, everything in it is not of God but of the world. If we love the world we cannot love God. We cannot serve 2 masters. We must decide between God or the pleasures of this world. The world will lead us astray, God won’t. Everything in the world the lust of the flesh and eye and the pride comes not from god but from the world.

We must not follow the world , because it has nothing for us, the world is passing away but we will live forever.

John is warning us to follow God, do not put your faith in a perishing world.

PRAYER

🙏🏻 Lord help us to keep our eyes on you, your word. Help us to walk in your ways. Help us to keep our eyes on our eternal home.
