That pesky spirit of competition

I woke up to my children strifing amongst each other about something that happened yesterday

You said, you did, you…

No I didn’t, yes you did, no I didn’t, yes you did… Mom!!

Sound familiar? Normally I would excuse it, or even ignore it, but today the HOLY SPIRIT was LOUD, and instead of ignoring it, I obeyed, and quickly shut it down.

This is how strife enters in, a difference of opinion, in a competitive state masked behind competition.

Competition is an activity or condition of competing also known as rivalry in which two parties compete for the same object.

Take a look at two children fighting over a toy, this is exactly what I am talking about! The end result is not pretty! Tears shows up, yelling, frustration, thoughts of anger begins to bubble to the surface…misunderstanding arises, and so does division; spirit of pride is ready to attack, jealousy is listening, and envy is ready to be unleashed…

Once you let strife enter in, pride, envy, and jealousy are also ready to attack . Feeling of sadness, rejection, low self esteem attaches mistrust shows up, division, selfishness, pride begins to reign.

Immediately I stepped in

No you will not fight, no you will not argue, no I will NOT let this continue, I shut it down right now

AUTHORITY steps in, the rest scatters! If I had just allowed strife to continue, competition to reign, I know there would be frustration, tears, and anger.. I see it, I know what happens next, so I STOP it, The minute it springs up, because if I don’t, this spirit will invite other spirits in, and there will be tears.

Where there is competition, there is envy, jealousy, and pride. Three of the predominant spirits of Division Apostle Paul strongly condemns this action in the Corinth church, and addresses the crowd.

You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy, and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans

1st Corinthians 3:3

The minute that strife shows up, we must shut it down quickly, even the thought of competition should not reign in the body. For when one member suffers, the rest will suffer with it. This is not just an issue of one person, but the whole body that’s involved. We cannot allow strife to continue, we must SHUT IT DOWN, the minute it shows up. We must take authority over it, and take it CAPTIVE

For anything that exalts itself against the knowledge and the WORD OF GOD is to be taken into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

Paraphrased 2 Corinthians 10:4-5

And again in James 4:2

You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet, but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight.

God is not the author of confusion but of peace, understanding, and a sound mind.
