What is Kindness?
In the words of my eight year old daughter, ” Kindness is when a guy is homeless, you give money to buy him food, or helping others to clean up the table, or do something kind.“
or in the words of my eleven year old, ” Kindness is helping out a student who dropped their book, by picking it up, or standing up for someone who is being bullied.”
They are right!
Kindness is doing a kind deed out of the bottom of your heart, without expecting anything in return. Helping out a complete stranger on the road, or buying a meal for a family in need, is a kind deed. Paying for a single mom’s groceries, or simply offering to buy a snack for a cashier, is also kindness. Giving someone a cup of water, is noticed, and rewarded by our father in heaven.
” And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”
Websters definition via Dictionary describes Kindness as a state or quality of being kind.
Being kind does not come naturally to us fleshly human beings, because we are naturally selfish, and self involved people, concerned for our own being, and filled with selfish cares, and desires. Kindness comes out of the heart, that is filled with God’s love. It is a fruit that spills out of the heart and is filled with the LOVE of GOD. Jesus was compassionate and kind. Everywhere he went he had compassion for people. He healed people, came to their rescue, and performed miracles. As followers of Jesus we are to exercise kindness to those around us, and extend a hand of GRACE to those that need it most.
The unkind, unlovable, selfish, and hateful people in this world. When the LOVE of GOD is absent in the heart of men, people tend to spill hate, and darkness into the world.
When people are mean to you, or unkind, be kind, and gracious instead. When someone is rude to you, choose to be loving, and compassionate towards them instead. They may not deserve your kindness, but who are we to judge what they do, and do not deserve. God constantly pours out his kindness on us, and is compassionate towards us, we must extend that same measure of kindness to those who are in need of it.
Kindness is a choice we make, to make the world around us, a better place.
” May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too’—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.”
The young woman at the well, let the man drink from her jar, and also let his camels drink the water too. She was kind to a complete stranger! Can we be kind to those we are around, and spill that fruit of KINDNESS all around us?
While I was writing this blog, my daughter made me a sandwich to snack on. She is pouring out the LOVE of GOD into my heart, and I am smiling 🙂
” But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”
Galatians 5: 22-23
I hope you have been blessed. Let us continue to pour out fruit, so that the love of JESUS can flow to the people around us.
