DAY 13 Live as Children of LIGHT
Continuing the 5th chapter of Ephesians, the importance of living a Godly life continues to be the subject of the verses. It reiterates how important a good example is, especially as a Christian.
” Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient, therefore do not be partners with them. For you were once in darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light, consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible – and everything that is illuminated becomes light. That is why it is said: “wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead and Christ will shine on you.” Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise making the most of every opportunity because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord. Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:6-20
On the surface, these verses are very straightforward and simply tell you to live a good life. Looking a little deeper though, the reason we are to live an honorable and Godly life is that, as Christians, we are now to be the light of God in this world. Once we are Christian the world looks at us as a light. They look to how we live and how we behave. Poor judgment leading to sinful ways are seen by the unsaved and used as a reason to discount our Testimony. “Oh look at him, he says he is a Christian but he was at that party last week drunk off his butt, smoking pot, cussing, and flirting with those girls while his wife was in the house. He is no Christian. Why do I need his God? How is he any better/different than I am?“
The verses state in 5:8-10 that you were once in darkness, but now as children of light you need to live as light and learn what pleases God. Before you were saved, no one but your loved ones truly cared what you did with your life. Many of them probably didn’t even notice or think twice about your foibles. Yet, now as a Christian, you are a light. Everyone looks to you for light or an example. If they see a reflection of themselves you cannot affect them towards the Lord, but if you find out what is pleasing to the Lord. (Get into his word and read the instructions) you can become a beacon for hope and grace that will make others want what you have. That being a stronger relationship with God.
