Modesty, what is modesty?

When we talk about modesty is it really clothes like we have been taught, or is it more than clothes? Maybe it’s a matter of moderation, or a rule of thumb?!

MODESTY by biblical standard

humility, humbleness, meekness, godliness.

MODESTY is a standard by which we are to stand by in all matters of our lives, yet so many focus just on CLOTHES!

Pharisee, the religious folks, rulers of LAW, in the bible, dress themselves really good, but were the worst kind, hypocrites! They made sure to tithe to a tee, appear righteous, in front of others, while failing to make it, or lift a finger in private, they were proper clothing, [long robes, tassels etc] followed the law….[regulations and traditions] yet fell short of Gods standard! Refer to Matthew 23; Matthew 6; Luke 11; Luke 20

They forgot about the most important matters, like mercy, justice, and grace

If you're going to do one, you might as well do another.

When I think about modesty I think about moderation, and not just my clothing, but my everything. Because everything I have, and everything I am belongs to the Lord.

Not only am I to pay attention to my clothing, I am to pay attention to the important matters too! Otherwise I am a hypocrite!

First when I think about clothing;

Am I too concerned with what people think of me ? Do I go overboard trying to please others. Do I love to be esteemed, or seek to sit in important seats, am I missing the most important ingredient love?

And second

Do I draw attention to myself, am I honoring God, am I pleasing the Lord, with what I am wearing.

Modesty is not about clothing, it is a ruler of moderation to keep ourselves in check. We humans can truly go overboard, and God has set a boundary for a reason, to protect us from evil, and what we are not aware of.

The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Psalm 16:6-7

I was fixing to have a meeting with a few friends of mine, when I stumbled upon a few thoughts.

What will they think of me? How would they perceive me, I will wear whatever I used to wear! [dress, skirt]

Immediately I checked myself, as well as the holy spirit checked me. What do you normally wear? Wear what is comfortable to you, don’t go overboard trying to please others. You are your own journey, do not be conserned with what people think of you. I picked you, I appointed you, now go, and be!

Tears streamed down my face. “Yes Lord, your will be done! It’s a difficult journey, but I must keep going, lead me. Direct me, instruct me, correct me if you have to. I desire to be pleasing to you, and honor you in all I do.

I went to that meeting unashamed! They might have been stares, and there might have been judgement, I didn’t care! My conscience was clear, I cleared it with the Lord! God saw the hearts, I did what I felt comfortable to do, and that’s not go overboard, trying to please others.

Many take this “ruler” to the extreme and make it a law, and even go as far as salvational standard. When Timothy, Peter spoke about modesty, he taught not commanded, he suggested, not demanded. We want to make sure we don’t take scriptures out of context, and make it fit whatever it is that we believe, or the church we go to believes.

Women should focus on internal beauty more than external. We are not to obsess with our hairstyles, fancy clothes, or even the type of jewelry we wear. We are to pay attention to internal godliness, which is good works, humility, quietness, and submission to our spouses. We are to be Proverbs 31 women, honoring God in all we do, directed with wisdom, lead by his spirit.

Yet some will take it to the extreme, and trust me I have myself been to this extreme, that I lost myself in the process.

"You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.

1 Peter 3:4, NLT

"I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes."

1 Timothy 2:9

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:7 NIV

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12:2 NIV

In the hearing of all the people he said to the disciples, "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets. They devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.

Luke 20:45-47

Then the Lord said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.

Luke 11:39
