21 Days to a Grateful Heart- DAY 2

Some of the scriptures in this reading plan are a bit long so I will try to keep my words short. A near impossibility I know, but I will try. Today consists of two separate scriptures. They are Psalms 116:1-19 and Colossians 2:6-7.

116:1 I love the Lord, for he heard my voice, he heard my cry for mercy
116:2 Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.
116:3 The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came over me; I was overcome by distress and sorrow.
116:4 Then I called on the name of the Lord, “Lord, save me!”
116:5 The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion.
116:6 The Lord protects the unwary; when I was brought low, he saved me.
116:7 Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you.
116:8 For you, Lord, have delivered me from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling.
116:9 that I may walk before the Lord in the land of the living.
116:10 I trusted in the Lord when I said, “I am greatly afflicted”;
116:11 in my alarm I said, “Everyone is a liar”
116:12 What shall I return to the Lord for all his goodness to me?
116:13 I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord.
116:14 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his peoples.
116:15 Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants.
116:16 Truly I am your servant, Lord; I serve you just as my mother did, you have freed me from my chains.
116:17 I will sacrifice a thank offering to you and call on the name of the Lord.
116:18 I will fulfill my vows t the Lord in the presence of all his people.
116:19 in the courts of the house of the Lord- in your
midst, Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord!
midst, Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord!

Psalms 116:1-19

2:6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue t live your lives in him,
2:7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

Colossians 2:6-7

Have you ever said or heard someone say the phrase, “I can’t thank you enough.”? I have and I realize now that that is a distinction I truly owe to God. If you stop for just a moment and think about all he has done. From the big things to the tiny little things, all the blessings he has given us. His faithfulness to us is incomparable to anything else. In the last verse, the writer says the words “overflowing with thankfulness” Think about that. Overflowing. Picture a bathtub with water pouring over the top. That should be the praise and thanks coming out of us for all that God has done.

In the psalm, the writer says they will give a thank offering to the Lord. Have you ever considered that thanking the Lord during prayer is a thank offering? Sure you pay your tithes, that is what you are supposed to do. You give to the needy and serve in the church, that is being obedient. But when was the last time you truly sat down and thanked God for your blessings. When was the last time you even actually considered the extent of his blessings?

Sit down with a piece of paper and start writing the things he has blessed you with. You will be amazed at all the things you have to thank him for if you are honest. Food, clothing, breathing, sight, hearing, the ability to do anything or everything you do, knowledge, wisdom, joy, even sorrow (Mourning a loss is a gift in that it reaffirms your caring), loved ones both living and dead, memories of those gone on before, friends, neighbors, coworkers, pets, healing, grace, salvation. I could go on for days but I think you get the picture. Thank him. Let your prayers and your time spent with him be a thank offering to him. Don’t always go beseeching something of the Lord. Call on his name just to give him thanks and honor.
