21 Days to a Grateful Heart – DAY 5

Recently I read these same three verses while doing the 40 days of Reading for Personal Growth. That series was about getting to know God and building your relationship with him. Naturally, I was a bit surprised as I am reading these verses again so soon that they speak to me in a different way. Such is the way of God, and why it is important to stay in his word. The same words can teach you something different every day.

Scripture To Ponder Upon

1:16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters.
1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
1:18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of first fruits of all he created.

James 1:16-18

Three verses… THREE and it says so much. First in verse 16 “Don’t be deceived.” The father of lies, satan, wants nothing more than to convince you he is responsible for the good things in your life or that you did things on your own. He wants to convince you that you do not need God or that God doesn’t care. This of course is a lie from the father of lies. His greatest weapon is deception and he easily can convince us, if we allow it, of how great we are or how things we have are not from God.

Verse 2 reminds us of God’s unwavering love and unchanging nature along with the FACT that all good and perfect gifts are from him. God is always on our side. He wants us to prosper and shine in this world despite the fact that the devil is going to put challenges in our path. Everything we have is a gift from God. The promotion you got at work, that compliment you received from a friend or stranger, that wonderful meal at your favorite restaurant all gifts from the Lord above. It all comes from him. We can do nothing without him. We use our talents that he gave us, to succeed in this world. That success is attributable to him as he put the right people in place to give us success. He always wants the best for us, and why wouldn’t he? He is our heavenly Father. Do you not, too, want what is best for your children? Do you wish to see your children fail, or would you rather see your children succeed and be happy?

Verse 3 He could have left us in this world to struggle along on our own, walk blindly through life never knowing him, surviving on what skills he chose to give us and nothing else, but he didn’t. He also gave us his word. The sacred book that is the Bible. You can read it as a story and leave it there. If you do, that is your loss. The scriptures are rich in how God loves us, how we can live according to his word and teachings, and how we can bring others to know him. It is a guidebook for this thing we endure called life. It is there for anyone who goes seeking knowledge and an open heart to receive it. This is yet another wonderful gift he has given us that so many do not appreciate. This collection of writings inspired by God, is another of the many perfect gifts that he has given us and it is more valuable than the material possessions we have. With this book we can get to know him and learn to be like him. That is a truly amazing gift indeed.

So three short little verses, yet they have so much to say. Thank you, Jesus for all your many great and wonderful gifts. I thank you for welcoming me a sinner into your family as a son. Your word you have given me so that it may ease my struggles in life and so I can know you. I thank you that you speak to me through this book, and let me feel your peace and love while I am in it. You are great and glorious Lord, and all I can do is humbly say thank you.
