Donkey Missions

by Lena Joseph

A few weeks ago our pastor invited His Lead Pastor to preach a message at our church, based on a BOOK he wrote. Here are a few of my personal thoughts on it.

Kish had a son named Saul, as handsome a young man as could be found anywhere in Israel, and he was a head taller than anyone else. Now the donkeys belonging to Saul’s father Kish were lost, and Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants with you and go and look for the donkeys."

A few weeks ago, our pastor welcomed his Lead Pastor to share a powerful message at our church—one inspired by a book he wrote. As I listened, I couldn’t help but reflect on some of its deeper insights, and I want to share a few of my personal thoughts with you.

At the end of the service, we were offered books to purchase and follow along with for the next four weeks—or longer, depending on how the theme continued at our church. I didn’t hesitate—I took two! Yes, two! If you’re reading this and are interested, I believe the book is available on Amazon, so you can make it your own. Highly recommended!

“After bringing the books home, my husband and I decided to read one together—Donkey Mission by Matt Keller—during our two-hour journey to Orlando, FL. With my book in hand and everything packed, we hit the road, ready to dive in.

Matt Keller, Pastor of Next Level Church, shares how seemingly pointless missions led him to his ultimate purpose.

As I read his book, in one of the chapters, What’s the Point, God really started speaking to me—because for the longest time, I felt like I was on a donkey mission too.

“Donkey mission?” you ask. Glad you did. It’s a term Keller uses to describe assignments that feel mundane, insignificant, or even frustrating—missions that don’t seem to have a clear purpose.

This idea is rooted in 1 Samuel 9:2-3, where a man named Kish sends his son, Saul, on what seems like an ordinary task: “Go and look for the donkeys.”

Keller emphasizes that donkey missions are everywhere, and they happen to all of us. The problem? Most people overlook their significance—because they don’t look like the dream we envisioned. They just look like… donkeys

Can you relate? Do you ever feel like you’re stuck on a mission that seems pointless—lacking direction, purpose, or significance?

But what if God is leading you somewhere through it? Maybe you’re right in the middle of it, or perhaps you’re nearing the end.

Know this: Everyone we admire has had to walk through their own donkey missions—those seasons of mundane, frustrating, or seemingly insignificant tasks—on their way to something greater. Some have faced many before stepping into their purpose, and maybe you’re walking through yours right now.

"Have you ever been on a ‘donkey mission’—a task that felt small, frustrating, or pointless at the time, but later turned out to be meaningful?
