Words of Affirmation

Here are a few tips to make your words of affirmation more effective.

Some examples of words of affirmation for children include

 – “I’m so proud of you!”

– “You’re doing a great job!”

– “I love the way you think!”

– “You’re so smart and capable!”

– “I’m grateful to be your parent!”

– “You make me happy!”

7 Ways of Introducing this Language

 1. Be specific: Instead of just saying “Good job!”, try “I love the way you used colors in your drawing!” or “Your hard work on your math homework paid off, you got an A!”

2. Be sincere: Only give praise when you mean it. Insincere praise can come across as manipulative or dismissive. Never encourage insincere praise, or manipulate your children into saying or doing something they don’t want to. We must respect our children, and their personal space.

3. Be personal: Use your child’s name and make eye contact when giving praise.
for example ‘Kelly, that was amazing, I love how you did that!“, shows you are personal as well as descriptive.

4. Be present: Give praise in the moment, when your child is still feeling proud or accomplished. Put away electronics, whatever you are doing stop, and engage with your child.

5. Be creative: Use different phrases, tone, and inflection to keep your words fresh and engaging. Don’t use the same repetitive words, change it up. That was awesome! Next time say ” I noticed you drew that image, was it you? I had no idea you knew how to draw lines so perfectly! “

6. Be consistent: Make praise a regular part of your interactions, not just when your child achieves something big. Even small efforts count. “Good job on making your bed; yey you brushed your teeth; oh wow those socks were put away!”
7. Be specific to their love language: If your child’s primary language is Words of Affirmation, they may crave more verbal praise and encouragement.

What is your LOVE language?
Words of affirmation can be a powerful tool for building your child’s confidence, self-worth, and relationship with you. By being intentional and genuine in your praise, you can help your child feel loved, valued, and encouraged to grow and thrive! Creativity opens up a world of possibilities that are endless!
