Ministry? What is that even?

January 30, 2020

I woke up ignited to GO! But when I woke up, I wasn't an evangelist, nor a missionary, nor was I even a minister. In fact I have forgotten all about the dream, and have continued to live my life, as if nothing happened. It was a few years later that I was reminded of my dream, and found myself in the midst of my calling.

The Greek word for ministry is diakoneo, which means "to serve." Ministry is not limited to a church building or the pulpit; it’s about serving others in whatever capacity or space we find ourselves. It’s shining the light of Jesus beyond church walls; in schools, workplaces, and social media spaces; reaching hearts and minds everywhere.

I remember one person with a flip phone asking for spiritual guidance, while another faced religious confusion and divorce, seeking advice. Some needed biblical counsel, others were searching for identity and purpose. I stepped in to serve.

The greatest among you will be your servant.
Matthew 23:11
NIV BIBLE

Serving isn’t just my purpose, its my calling, it’s my passion and natural gift. I open my heart to serve wherever I can. Faithful service with one person led to another, and as I was faithful with two, more people were sent to me.

I live by the biblical principle found in Luke 16:10

If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities.
Luke 16:10
NIV BIBLE

My “little things” looked like blessing a crossing guard with apples and water, sharing the gospel with a homeless man who smelled of the streets, or prayer walking with the principal at my daughter’s school. I opened my heart to serve wherever God called me and remained obedient and faithful to each task.

Serving others comes naturally to me. I wasn’t a social media influencer, but my Facebook posts inspired and encouraged many. People would message me with their needs, and I did my best to answer with strength and compassion. I also joined online forums and groups to support and uplift others. In encouraging them, I found myself encouraged and motivated to help even more people. When I was faithful and helpful to a few, God sent many more my way, filling my inbox until I knew it was time to start a group called "Firestarters," where we could come together to support and encourage one another on our faith journeys.
