Foolish Galatians

What are you thinking?

How are you running to the very thing that enslaved you?

Why are you running backwards?

Who put you under a spell, for you to act and behave this way?

 The Problem?

Many started going back to the old way of doing things.

Perhaps those in the midst deceived them, manipulated them into thinking…

Question :

Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?

Faith

Substance of things hoped for, evidence of things not yet seen. ( Internal belief and confidence of the unseen)

Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard?

Key Verses

Ephesians 2:810 (NIV):
Verse 8: “For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God.”
Verse 9: “Not by works, so that no one can boast.”
Verse 10: “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

 Explanation

1. Salvation by Grace:
Grace: This term refers to unmerited favor from God. It emphasizes that salvation is a gift, not something earned through human effort.
Faith: Salvation is received through faith, meaning trust and belief in Jesus Christ and His redemptive work.

2. Not from Ourselves:
– The passage asserts that salvation is not a result of our own actions or merits. This reinforces the idea that humans cannot achieve righteousness on their own.

3. Gift of God:
– Salvation is described explicitly as a gift. This means that it is freely given by God and cannot be claimed through personal achievement.

4. Not by Works:
– This phrase clarifies that good deeds or obligation to the law cannot secure salvation. If salvation were based on works, individuals could boast about their achievements, which contradicts the essence of grace.

5. God’s Workmanship:
Workmanship: This term indicates that believers are created by God for a purpose. It highlights the intentionality behind creation and salvation.
Good Works: While salvation is not earned by works, believers are created in Christ Jesus to do good works. These works are a response to salvation, not a means to attain it.

Prepared in Advance: This implies that God has a plan for each believer, and good works are part of the Christian life, reflecting the transformation that comes from faith.

Ephesians 2:8-10 beautifully illustrates the relationship between grace, faith, and works in the Christian faith. Salvation is a divine gift received through faith, not through human effort. However, once saved, believers are called to live out their faith through good works, which are part of God’s purpose for their lives. This passage emphasizes humility, reliance on God’s grace, and the importance of living a life that reflects that grace through action.

God's Covenant with Abraham

“The law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.” Galatians 2:24-25

We are no longer under a tutor to lead us, but are under a leader to guide us.

Justification by FAITH

The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed.

Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” ( verse

He believed then came ( actions ) sacrificed ( he gave his son) his son  correlation with John 3:16

Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham.

Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. ( verses 8-9)

Purpose of the Law

A person is not justified by works. Yes show me your works, to evidence faith, but we are not justified by works. Galatians 2:16

What’s the purpose of the Law?

Because of sin, to keep people in check, until Christ has come.

Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed.

( before Christ , and after Christ)

So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.

Theres no need for a shadow when the real thing shows up. Christ came, there’s no need for a law. Christ was fullfillment of the Law.

So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

Journaling & Reflection

Pray and Apply

Reread verses 13-14, and reflect on what Christ Jesus has done for you. Because of what He has done, you are now able to receive the blessings of God and the gift of the Holy Spirit in your life. Your salvation is entirely based on what Jesus has done for you––not what you have done for God! Thank Jesus for what He has done for you, and ask Him to reveal a deeper understanding of what it means to be saved by faith and not by works. Ask the Holy Spirit to bring healing to any places of your heart that still pursue acts of performing and producing for God as a means to earn His affection, then receive His unconditional love.
