Section 1
verses 1-26 The Alabaster Box The Last Supper Betrayal at the Table Communion

CHAPTER OUTLINE

OVERVIEW

Mark the author sections the chapter into sections and into topics, in which he recounts a moment between Jesus and the woman with the Alabaster Box( vs 3-11) and  the Supper with his Disciples ( vs 12-26)

The Alabaster Box

the most expensive perfume in an Alabaster Box

A familier STORY to many of US

Jesus is hanging out as a guest at Simon (the Leper) house and a woman comes to celebrate and honor Jesus.

Woman by the name of Mary Magdalene ( Lazarus Sister) known to be a sinner poured out extensive perfume on Jesus Feet.

kneeling down to wash Jesus feet, and dry them with her hair.

Not only that, annoining Jesus with the most expensive perfume known to humankind

a year worth of wages perfume to celebrate JESUS.

If you were the one standing in the ROOM, what would your thoughts be?

Would you be critical of what she did, or would you rejoice with her and Jesus at what she had done?

Disciples of Jesus experienced this moment and so did other folks. Some began to express that this was a waste of money, and the bottle should have been sold for profit and the money given to the poor.

What she did rubbed some people the wrong way. It was expensive perfume; she could have given it away to the poor.

But what she was doing, only Jesus understood.

Act of devotion and preparation for his burial.

Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly. (verses 4-5)

Jesus understood her mission, he understood her assignment. The others did not. They only saw outside of it, Jesus saw beyond that.

She anointed his body for burial.

She illustrated deep repentance and bold faith by pouring costly perfume on Jesus’ feet. Her actions, which included washing his feet with her tears and hair, demonstrated supreme worship, gratitude for forgiveness, and an act of service to the Messiah.

What was the significance of that moment?

1. Consecration. Sometimes we criticize what we don’t understand, and as a result we fall into sin. We must seek God for Direction not leaning unto our own understanding but submitting to God for Direction.

DONT TRUST YOUR FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS ALLOW GOD TO LEAD YOU AND GUIDE YOUR PATH. Proverbs 3:5

2. Worship & Devotion. Her actions, which included washing his feet with her tears and hair, demonstrated supreme worship, gratitude for forgiveness, and an act of service to the Messiah.

3. Humility. She didn’t care to notice what anyone said, or anyone thought; she was on the assignement, to annoint Jesus regardless of people’s opinions. She humbled herself, and those who humble themselves in the presence of Jesus, will be exalted. Matthew 23:12

Preparation of Last Supper

Last Meal eaten together with his disciples.

called the Last Supper

Assignment #1: A man carrying a jar of water, for disciples to follow him, and ask him about the meeting.

Assignment #2  The man carrying the jar of water to obey the command and let disciples use the room.

I don’t know if it was the same disciples who went on another mission, but what I know is that obedience was required on BOTH of their part.

Mark 11:2-3 Palm Sunday where disciples had another assignment to complete and obey.

Both of the parties HAD to follow suit for this SUPPER meeting to happen and the gathering to take place.

Judas – ONE of the disciples who would soon betray Jesus ate at the TABLE too. Jesus knew his betrayer and he still let him sit at the TABLE.

The Day of... the Betrayal

While they were eating Jesus broke the News!

One of you will betray me. Psalm 41:9

Mark 14:20 AMP

“And He replied, “It is one of the twelve [disciples], one who is dipping bread in the bowl with Me. ” Mark 14:21-22 AMP

” For the Son of Man goes [to the cross] just as it is written [in Scripture] of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.” While they were eating, Jesus took bread and blessed it [giving thanks and praise], and He broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take it. This is My body.” (Matt 26:26-29); (Luke 22:17-20); (1 Cor 11:23-25)

Key Points

1. Jesus fed his enemy. Jesus knew who his betrayer was, and he still let him sit and the table with him, and even eat with him. Luke 6:35

2. He was obedient to the point of death and the cross. Jesus did not focus on his feelings, but instead he focused on the mission at hand, his purpose. John 3:16

Communion

 Mark 14:22-26 AMP

While they were eating, Jesus took bread and blessed it [giving thanks and praise], and He broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take it. This is My body.” (Matt 26:26-29); (Luke 22:17-20); (1 Cor 11:23-25)

” And when He had taken a cup [of wine] and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.(Ex 24:8)

And He said to them, “This is My blood of the [new] covenant, [My blood] which is being poured out for many [for the forgiveness of sins].

The bread represents Christ’s broken body, while the wine/juice represents his shed blood for the forgiveness of sins.

Purpose: It acts as a memorial of Christ’s death, a celebration of his resurrection, and a hope for his return.

Section 2
verses 27-51 Betrayal at the Table Falling Away Arrest of Jesus

CHAPTER OUTLINE

OVERVIEW

Mark the author sections the chapter into sections and into topics, in which he recounts a moment between Jesus and Peter, the warning of falling away ( vs 27-31) betrayal in the garden of Gethsemane ( vs 32-41) & the arrest of Jesus. ( vs 43-51)

Falling Away

You will fall away. Not maybe but definitely. The time will come when temptation will come around and will tempt you to fall away.

Fall awaydeparting, or gradually decrease in number

Jesus is warning his disciples that the falling away will soon appear.

“everyone of his disciples will fall away, or least tempted to fall away. “Sword Study | Chapter 14

I will strike the shepherd

And the sheep will be scattered”Zech 13:7

Peter ONE of Jesus’ closest disciples declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.” ( vs 29)

Peter was overcome with pride and pride ruled his actions.

Jesus knew the outcome before Peter knew the outcome. He was filled with his pride to think he could not be deceived. Don’t think you can’t fall away, the elect can be deceived

the BIBLE tells us in Matthew 24:24

For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

But even if you and I are tempted, God gives us a way of escape. He provides a way out of our temptation for us

when we are tempted to fall into pride

when we fall into fear.

or allow discouragement to rule our actions.

insecurity, jealousy, greed and pride

Do not be surprised

If Peter one of Jesus closest disciples, falls away, you and I have a chance to fall away too.

but even if we do, or when we do,

let us remmember,

Proverbs 24:16 states, “For a righteous man falls seven times, and rises again; but the wicked stumble in time of calamity,”

Illustrating the resilience and perseverance of the righteous in the face of adversity.

God always provides a way of escape for his chosen ones.

the BIBLE tells us in 1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

In the GARDEN of Gethsemane

Jesus in his last moments, prayed to the FATHER

  • to pass this cup for him. To take away the pain, to not procceed with the plan.

However,

in the end, Jesus was obedient to God’s Plan.

not my will but yours be done

Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will. ( vs 36 )

Arrest of Jesus

While they were speaking Judas the betrayer acknowledged Jesus with a KISS. ( brotherly love)

One of you will betray me. Psalm 41:9

Mark 14:20 AMP

“And He replied, “It is one of the twelve [disciples], one who is dipping bread in the bowl with Me. ” Mark 14:21-22 AMP

The enemy will use anyone that is willing to be used. Judas allowed the enemy to tell him lies, and that deception ruled his actions. Peter the closest disciple was filled with pride, and pride ruled his actions, Pride also worked in Judas heart and he decided to go forward with his plan.

To betray JESUS and to give him UP as a ransom for MANY

Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. ( vs 38)

Section 3
verses 53-72 Arrest of Jesus Put on Trial Peter Dissowning Jesus

CHAPTER OUTLINE

OVERVIEW

Mark the author sections the chapter into sections and into topics, in which he recounts  Jesus being arrested ( vs 53-65 ) and Peter denying Jesus ( vs 66-72 )

Jesus Arrested

Judas betrays Jesus. Everyone flees, Jesus is arrested,

Now Jesus is facing his enemies.

Before the High official – Sanhedrin alongside with chief priests & teachers of the law ( religious folks)

Mark 14 foreshadows this moment, you will stand on trial before the officials on account of me. But when you are put on trial do not worry about what you’re going to say. ( Mark 13 :9 & 11 )

Put on Trial ( My Testimony)

I was put on what felt like a TRIAL, A QUESTIONING of some sort. Right before I was getting baptised into a new religion, the pastor asked everyone if we had any questions.

  • I had a question… a very important one

a choice to flee, or Rise

I chose boldness, holy spirit spoke on my behalf. I didn’t see a person, or a pastor at that moment, I was dealing with spirits, principalities and powers beyond what this world could see & understand.

” As belivers we will be put on trials, we will be tested, we will encounter temptations, and some of us will stand before governors. We are not to worry about what we’re going to say or how were going to defend ourselves. The Holy Spirit will work on our behalf.” Sword Study | Chapter 14

Snippet from my upcoming book

“ TRIALS WILL PROVE THAT YOUR FAITH IS GENUINE. It is being tested and tried through difficult situations and circumstances that your faith develops into something strong and powerful. Anyone can say they have faith until they are put to the test and tried by fire. As fire tests and purifies gold, so do trials reveal the condition of our faith, our heart, the genuiness of our fruit, and challenge us to become better.

These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith, of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire, may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.” (1 Peter 1:7)

The moment that changed the entire course of my spiritual journey! The moment that woke me up and opened my eyes to see beyond religion, and what I understood about faith. I was about to be baptized into a religion that I barely knew, and was about to embark on the journey of the unknown. Before God could trust me with a book, i had to be faithful with my assignment.

The chief priests and teachers of the law as well as the HIGH OFFICIAL ( Sanhedrin) were looking for evidence to unalive Jesus, but did not find any.

He stood silent like a lamb, ( Isaiah 53:7) as the sheep is silent before its shearers. He did not open his month

Moral lesson here?

When you are put on the trial, accused, tried, stand silent, and allow God to defend you. Don’t reason with others, don’t try to explain yourself,

They’ve already made up their mind about you!

Peter observed the situation at a distance, because of FEAR.

Fear keeps us stagnant in place, it keeps us at a distance with God. It cripples our walk and our identity suffers.

God has not given us a spirit of fear, but power to overcome all those difficulties. 2 Timothy 1:7

There is no fear in Love. Perfect Love of GOD casts out fear. 1 John 4:18

Going back to the trial,

Many of those religious had evidence but none of that evidence worked against the Savior.

Finally they had ONE account. They needed evidence. Walk in the way of Love, just as Christ giving himself up for humankind. Eph 5:2-4

Are you the Mesiah ?

 I am

He does not lie, nor is he a man to change his mind.

One account of supposed Blasphemy an act of offense

Now comes the humiliation

  • They beat him, spit on him, blindfolded him, struck him with fists, and beat him some more. Jesus took on the beating, and the humiliation for the world.

But he was bruised, for our iniquities. Isaiah 53:5

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Denial of Jesus

You were one of the disciples, I saw you… evidence

But he denied it, just as Jesus had said it,

VS 30 – Truly I tell you you will disown me.

 Then he remembered, and wept

in other words, peter recognized what Jesus said about this moment, and he wept with sorow, repenting for all that he has done.

Journaling & Reflection

Pray and Apply

What would it look like for you to worship Jesus with unfiltered passion? In this season of your life, how can you extravagantly worship Jesus? What cost are you willing to give in your devotion to Jesus? Spend a few minutes reflecting and allowing the Spirit of God to stir within you a greater passion and adoration for Jesus. Conclude your moment of reflection by worshipping Jesus in response to all He has done for you and all that He is.

Read 2 Corinthians 12:7-10. Reflect on what it means to find strength in Christ. Where do you need strength in your faith at the moment? Are you relying on your own abilities without trusting in the power of the Holy Spirit to strengthen you? Spend a few minutes in prayer, acknowledging weak areas in your life and asking God for the strength you need to do His will.
