This section of the letter introduces sonship, a warning, and a comparison of Hagar ( slave) to Sarah ( heir)...
“The law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.” Galatians 2:24-25
Heirs and Guardians: Paul begins by comparing believers
to heirs who, while still children, are no different from slaves
because they are under guardianship until they reach maturity.
This metaphor illustrates that before knowing Christ, people
were bound by the law, which served as a guardian.
heirs – legally inherit the land or the fathers estate.
Guardians – protect and defend heritage or estate ( property)
An illustration
1. An heir cannot claim the rights and privilages until of age.
2. The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father.
Sonship and Intimacy with God. Believers are now children of God,
they can call Him “Abba! Father!”
This intimate relationship signifies
the privileges of being heirs
of God through Christ, contrasting the previous
state of being slaves to the law.
We see this played out in the parable of the Prodigal Son ( Luke 15 :11-32)
Father gives a portion to one son and to another son. One squanders ( wastes away ) but then comes to his senses. He longer feels worthy to be a son or a heir, but is willing to be a slave. The father embraces him, forgives him, and gives him right to be a son, an authority and righteous heir to his kingdom.
“So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.” ( vs 7)
Galatians 2
Galatians 1
James 2
James 1
Mark 16
Mark 15
“The law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.” Galatians 2:24-25
We are no longer under a tutor to lead us, but are under a leader to guide us.
There are consequences to those who walk away from truth.
Grace not works
When you know better, you do better!
Do you wish to become a slave once again? Because then you loose the privillages and enheritances.
Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?
Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?
Did I waste my time preaching to you?
Sends out a WARNING
Those people are zealous to win you over, but for no good. People want to convert you but for evil intentions, for selfish gains, for their approval.
What they want is to alienate you from us, so that you may have zeal for them. Separation, division, conflict. They divide to conquar. It is fine to be zealous ( passionate) provided the purpose is good, and to be so always, not just when I am with you.
I do this ( send these letters out, sending you a warning )
because I CARE for you.
You are my children because I birthed the Gospel for you.
Abraham had two sons
One by Hagar ( the slave woman
The other by Sarah ( free woman)
The women represent two covenants
Covenants are agreements or promises.
One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar.
The other, Now you, brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise.
Paul is sending a warning and tells us of the consequences.
When you belong to one, you cannot be another. Same goes with FAITH vs Works.
A person is not justified by works. Yes show me your works, to evidence faith, but we are not justified by works. Galatians 2:16
What’s the purpose of the Law?
Because of sin, to keep people in check, until Christ has come.
Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed.
( before Christ , and after Christ)
So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.
Theres no need for a shadow when the real thing shows up. Christ came, there’s no need for a law. Christ was fullfillment of the Law.
So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

Gal 4:1-7
Reflect on what it means to be an adopted heir of Christ and to have God as your heavenly Father. How is He a good Father you can trust fully? How does He lavishly love you and protect you? Listen to the worship song, “Good, Good Father” on Spotify, Pandora, or iTunes as you thank Him for being your Heavenly Father. Or if you’d prefer, simply thank and worship Him in your own words as your Abba Father.
Gal 4:8-20
The false prophets were leading people astray to create a following of their own. Reflect on how dangerous self-seeking motives can be, not just in your own life but in the lives of those you influence. Ask Jesus to help you steward well the influence you have and to use every opportunity to draw people closer to Jesus and to purify your heart of any self-seeking ambitions.
Gal 4:21-31
Have you ever taken matters into your own hands because you were afraid God’s promises would not occur if you didn’t? What was that experience like, and what did you learn from it? How can this reflection encourage you to trust God and believe in His promises, submit to His ways and yield yourself to His timing? Talk to God in prayer for a few minutes, asking Him to empower you to make faith-filled decisions and to trust in Him.

Your Story is important to someone else. The details of your testimony are life to someone else. I couldn’t have spoken into strangers life, if I myself did not go through the battles. I can only speak because I know the pain, the hurt, and confusion. I pray God comforts us, and gives us the grace to tell our story, no matter how small the details are.
Let’s not hesitate to share our testimonies and help each other walk through the valleys, and reach our destinations together. With a sense of fulfillment, and helping others get there can be a rewarding and satisfying experience, because when we lift each other up, we don’t just reach our destinations, we thrive in them.
I’d love to share your Story on my SITE!
