Psalm 51 | Psalm of Cleansing

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.
Psalms 51: 7-9
NIV BIBLE

David, a man after God’s own heart, is pleading before God. He is praying a prayer of Cleansing, a prayer of Repentance. A prayer that would restore the joy of his salvation, a prayer that would restore his communion with God.

Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.
Psalms 51:4
paraphrased

David acknowlwledges his wrongs, he isn’t making excuses, he isn’t pointing fingers, he knows he is wrong, so he goes to settle the matter.

Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place.
Psalms 51:5-6
NIV BIBLE

My favorite verse in the WHOLE BIBLE since I was a child, “Wash me and I will be white than snow.” Before I even understood those words, I would declare them, into the atmosphere.

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.
Psalms 51: 7-9
NIV BIBLE

I know I am sinful, and full of flaws. I know I am imperfect, but I am NOT here to make excuses, or hide behind my sin, I am here to acknowledge my wrong Lord!

David is transparent with God. He doesn’t hide, he doesn’t excuse his actions, he simply repents for his evil behaviour. We are to follow his example and pray this prayer
