Our sinful nature ( flesh) desires things that are contrary to the spirit. In fact spirit and flesh are opposites of each other. Spirit focuses on how it’s spiritually beneficial whereas flesh focuses on how it can benefit physically. For example, when spirit desires to pray, or fast, or do anything to grow and develop spiritually, our flesh declares a war!

Imagine being in a battle ring; on one side you have one fighter, and on the other you have an opponent fighter, both are ready to beat on each other, and FOCUS, is to WIN!

Flesh vs Spirit

And so it begins! Flesh wants things it’s own way, and the spirit God’s Way. Flesh desires to be comfortable, live in fear, make excuses, follow sinful desires, treasures, and pursuit. Spirit desires that we walk in freedom, free of fear, full of purpose, towards our destiny and purpose.

We are faced with choices, every single day! To do that which spirit desires, or give in to our fleshly desires.

That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the spirit is spirit

Fleshly thoughts, desires passions, bring about more desires, passions, pursuits. We want, we desire, we pursue! Our flesh is never satisfied, and it always wants more. Sometimes our flesh even goes overboard, if we do not take control of it.

So what’s the solution?

Walk in the way of the spirit, so you will not fulfill the desires of the flesh.

Spirit does the opposite! Spirit warns, spirit keeps us in control, and spirit desires what is best for us.

What does it mean to walk in the spirit? It is to constantly follow in the way of the spirit, to seek God and his ways, to constantly depend on his guidance, and seek his direction.

Prayer

Help us Lord to set our minds on things above and not below. Help us to run to you, rather than our carnal feelings and emotions, which so often fail us. Fill us with your spirit, and give us a desire to seek spiritual things rather than carnal desires of our flesh. Lead us in the way of Righteousness, for your name sake. We trust you, God!

If we [claim to] live by the [Holy] Spirit, we must also walk by the Spirit [with personal integrity, godly character, and moral courage—our conduct empowered by the Holy Spirit]. We must not become conceited, challenging or provoking one another, envying one another.

Galatians 5: 25-26

Flesh wants to make quick decisions, then blame OR feel self pity. Spirit wants to make wise decisions, and tread the path lightly! Flesh doesn’t think about spiritual consequences, spirit does!

When we wake up, to face our day, we get into the boxing ring, flesh vs spirit. What is our focus today? Who is in control today?

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Galatians 5:22- 24

They are at war with each other. They are constantly fighting for our attention. Our flesh is at battle with the spirit. Each day we wake up we are faced with a battle. To do that which is pleasing to God, or that which is enticing to the flesh.

Whatever we feed and focus on, will be our focal point! It will be that which we set our eyes on, that which we give attention to. If we focus on carnal things of this world, that is what will be magnified in our lives. We must intentionally choose to focus on spiritual things of this world, and less on the physical.

But if you are guided and led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the Law. Now the practices of the sinful nature are clearly evident: they are sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality (total irresponsibility, lack of self-control), idolatry, sorcery, hostility, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions [that promote heresies], envy, drunkenness, riotous behavior, and other things like these.

Galatians 5: 19-21
